"Choose a job you love,

and you will never have to work

a day in your life.

Career coaching supports both career transition and career growth.  The foundation is passion and purpose by having a career that fulfills both your needs and desires professionally.   Building upon that,  areas such as professional performance, improved work-life balance, and advancement all contribute to define what career success looks like for you.

What is Career Coaching?

Career coaching is a one-on-one process that is designed to maximize your potential, development, learning, performance and success – both on a professional and personal level.  It’s not entirely different from what is often referred to as ‘life coaching' with the key exception being the primary goals are career driven.

For those who are looking to grow in their current career, your coach will use assessments, listening, and language skills to support you in the process of finding balance and achieving greater performance.  In addition to these, for those exploring career options, we will add practical elements such as professional presence, interviewing skills and personal marketing (i.e. resume, social media etc.).

In all cases, career coaching is about tapping into human potential and it puts great emphasis on the present and the future.  It focuses on making changes in the present time and take advantage of experience-related learning (as it occurs in practical situations), rather than traditional learning, which often occurs in the context of hypothetical situations.  Career coaching also has the added elements of accountability, responsibility, and follow-up, which differentiates it from many other learning and development methods.

Why Career Coaching?

While coaching can be used to correct identified gaps in performance and/or behavior, it is increasingly being used to develop and invest in future potential and provide support through transitions.  Career coaching can not only strengthen leadership skills and help develop soft skills, it can also improve communication and inter-organizational relationships, time management and more.  Many organizations are good at developing their employees in their required “hard” or practical/technical skills and training. However, career coaching can greatly help by enhancing “soft” or people skills, building strong relationships, lowering stress, and developing the emotional intelligence to be a successful and effective team player, leader, and manager.

Benefits of Career Coaching

The effects of career coaching are widely recognized in two areas, namely increased performance as a result of improved goal focus and effective learning, and improved relations as a result of better communication and self-awareness.   The coaching process can help set defined goals and discover simpler ways of accomplishing them, which often times lead to lower stress and increased efficiency.   Adding accountability, another important piece of the process, typically accelerates achievement of goals.

There are a number of possible benefits and areas of impact that can be felt as a result of professional coaching, both for the individual and the organization:

  • Increased productivity and performance, professionally and personally

  • Increased awareness and stronger interpersonal skills / reduced conflicts

  • Leadership development

  • Career development and transition support

  • Focused goal setting and execution

  • Enhanced confidence and empowerment

  • Improved communication, listening and decision-making skills

  • Greater capability to handle challenges and change

  • Improved problem-solving skills

  • Increased motivation and engagement

  • Ability to reframe challenges into opportunities

  • Increased satisfaction

  • Improved time management and greater work-life balance

  • Decreased stress

Ideal career coaching candidates share a common trait in that they want some sort of change in their lives. You must be willing, wanting and ready to put both work and energy into making changes happen.   For career coaching to work at its best, it is essential that you are motivated to invest your time and energy into integrating the outcomes of the coaching sessions into your professional and possibly your personal life to maximize the benefits of coaching.

Career Coaching Session Structure

Career coaching is a process of change and growth, and although change can at times be almost instantaneous, often some trial and error is expected and normal.  It takes time for new behaviors, perspectives, and ways of thinking to set root and find momentum as well as for action to take place and long-term learning and growth to be established.

To be truly effective, a minimum three month commitment is usually necessary, with virtual meetings every other week via Zoom.  The frequency and duration of meetings are flexible, and it is not uncommon for clients to continue working with their life coach for longer periods of time.

Between regular sessions, you will be given ‘assignments’ (co-created between us) to work on, and it’s important to know that your time and willingness to take action on these assignments is key in order to successfully move towards your defined goals.
